Assessment details
Purpose
Bloodstream infections (BSIs) are the most common type of healthcare-associated infection in neonates and a significant challenge globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. These infections, often caused by bacteria, can lead to severe morbidity and mortality among newborns.
The Neo BSI Prevention Assessment identifies potential gaps in infection prevention and control policies, training, and practices that can be targeted for change to prevent neonatal BSIs.
Contents
This tool includes instructions to assist with preparing for and conducting the Neo BSI Prevention Assessment, analyzing and sharing assessment data, and preparing for next steps.
The Neo BSI Prevention Assessment includes sections on leadership and coordination, central venous catheters and peripherally inserted central catheters, umbilical catheters, peripheral intravenous catheters, and medication preparation practices.
How to use
An assessment coordinator should guide the assessment process.
The Neo BSI Prevention Assessment is self-administered by as many healthcare personnel as possible in the unit. This allows for a robust analysis of gaps in policies, training, and practices. It accounts for multiple viewpoints, leading to insights potentially missed by other assessment methods.
Once results from the assessment are available, they can be used to guide change in neonatal care units using quality improvement models.
Feedback report
To facilitate data collection and analysis, CDC provides a modifiable Excel workbook that is coded to aggregate data and generate a summary report. This Data Entry and Summary Report can be shared with unit staff and leadership.
